Looking out for customers

With a major snowstorm coming, one customer called about salt. She wrote that the owner saved her the last bag without being asked, and the staff helped load it into her car.

“If you need customized advice regarding ANYTHING involving grounds, THIS IS THE PLACE. The gentleman behind the counter, and his son (I believe), are beyond helpful every time I have been in. You can tell they are experts. And they don't just tell you things to make themselves money; they specifically tell you the straight truth every time. That's probably Bring any related question to them...they are happy to answer all of your questions in knowledgeable detail. It's a friendly environment too; you, as the customer, will be treated as if you are an old friend. It's truly a great place. Support small business and skip Home Depot where you will be told "Sorry...not my department" when you ask a question about a product or a situation with your grounds.”

“Skip shopping at big corporates and go to Bartell! I can’t say enough good things about this store! With a major snowstorm coming, I called asking if they had any salt in their inventory and there was, and the owner saved me the last bag (without me asking). To top it off, the staff graciously helped load it into my car so I could get home safely. This is exactly why it’s so important to shop local—you just don’t get this kind of thoughtful, proactive service anywhere else. Highly recommend!”

Bartell's started during the Great Depression, when a young Leslie B. Bartell sold eggs from his Dad's farm and bought a delivery truck.

The Rahway teenager hauled fertilizer, coal and feed all over Union County, then rented a warehouse off Central Avenue and opened a feed store. As his son Leslie put it, "He would haul anything, anywhere, anytime."

These days it's more grass seed and garden hoses than manure and chicken feed. But Bartell's is still a small town operation, where a neighbor can walk in with a blighted tomato plant and walk out with suggestions for a cure.

We carry a complete line of products and tools for landscapers and homeowners. There's a retail store on Central Avenue in Clark and a bulk yard on Lake Avenue in Scotch Plains. Customers rate us 4.5 on Google from 184 reviews.
